Usage statistics and how to turn them off

What the once-a-day { version, url, framework } report holds, where it is never sent, and three ways to turn it off.

Files and their contents never leave the browser. Files are read only in the browser (or Node). A file is sent to a server only when you turn on the upload attribute, and then only to your own server.

What is sent

  • Only { version, url, framework }: the 82excel version, the page URL as origin + pathname (no query or hash), and one of vanilla, element, cdn.
  • Nothing about any file: no name, size, contents or check result.
  • Once a day per browser, three seconds later, as a keepalive POST (credentials: 'omit') to https://82excel.com/api/usage. The localStorage key is e82:usage.
  • It happens on the first browser call of check/inspect, including from the web component. A component that is only on the page and checks no file sends nothing. Failures never affect the page.

Where it is never sent

Node, localhost and private hosts (.local, .internal, .corp …), single-label intranet names, IP addresses, and 82excel.com itself.

Turning it off

<!-- whole page -->
<html data-82excel-telemetry="off">

<!-- web component -->
<excel-82 telemetry="off"></excel-82>

<script>
  // functions
  await Excel82.check(file, { telemetry: false });
  await Excel82.inspect(file, { telemetry: false });
</script>
